Symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, and unsteadiness related to vestibular disorders are common complaints in adults and the consequences can limit function, negatively impact quality of life, and can cause falls. All medical professionals need to be able to effectively screen for vestibular disorders and know how to make appropriate referral for diagnosis, medical management, and vestibular rehabilitation. As you learn how to screen for vestibulopathy, you can complete the “Typical Vestibular Pathologies’ Symptoms and Referral Options” chart that is provided with course. This chart will be a great reference to keep somewhere convenient to use when you come across patients suspected of having vestibular pathology.

Audience
This course focuses on educating medical professionals, who do not have vestibular medicine or rehabilitation training, to be able to take a thorough history of patients that present with complaints of dizziness, vertigo, and/or unsteadiness and apply this information toward understanding the related vestibular pathology with the goal of making an appropriate referral. Additionally, this presentation can benefit practicing vestibular rehabilitation specialists by acting as a review.

Course Objectives
After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the structure and function of the vestibular system to be able to apply this knowledge to understanding vestibular pathology.

  • State the impairments and activity limitations related to vestibulothalamocortical pathway, vestibulo-ocular reflex, and vestibulospinal tract dysfunction.

  • Demonstrate comprehensive history taking of a patient with report of symptoms due to vestibular pathology.

  • Identify dizziness and vertigo patterns (quality, duration, tempo, precipitating activities, associated problems) of vestibular pathology based on patient’s symptoms and synthesize the dizziness patterns to identify possible vestibular pathology.

  • Provide rationale for referral to a vestibular rehabilitation specialist, physician, or emergency department when given a vestibular pathology case.
