Mindfulness meditation is a practice that can provide patients with the ability to respond skillfully to the physical and emotional challenges that affect them. The practice does this by training the mind to simply pay attention to the lived experience and to adopt a mental stance to accept it as it is. This training changes the way patients experience their challenges. From mindfulness meditation practice, patients form a healthy perspective and relationship with what is challenging them, which takes the power out of what they are experience. Patients that practice mindfulness meditation have been shown to make many improvements, including attenuating physical pain, anxiety, and depression.

Although it would be ideal for patients to regularly practice mindfulness meditation, there are many reasons why they don’t. This course, which is part 2 of a two-part series taught by Dr. Farrell*, offers a beneficial option by teaching physical rehabilitation specialists the skills that are foundational for mindfulness meditation so that they can be used as adjunctive treatment strategy with patients. By having physical rehabilitation specialists incorporate these skills into treatment, patients have the chance to improve outcomes and have a better quality of life.

*Part 1 of this two-part series introduces all medical professionals to mindfulness meditation for self-care and to be a utilized as a tool for modeling beneficial behaviors with patients.
